Gustaf was born on May 22nd, 1853. Gustaf's father was Abraham Telning and his mother was Lena Nybelin. His paternal grandparents were Lorentz Telning and Anna Helena Bergman. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Sten, Gustav, Carl, Lars, Salomon, Otto, Wilhelmina and Clara. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children. Moved to Fredrikstad, Norway17.4.1875. Sailed with the schooner/brig Juliane of Sandefjord (captain O. Kruge from Larvik) that left Fredrikstad 4.4.1876 for Cardiff.

Alfrid was part of the crew on the ship Pleiades as 997 tons full rigged iron ship built 1869 by McMillan, Durbarton, that sailed from Gravesend (UK) 12/12/1877 to Lyttleton New Zealand and arrived 11/3/1878. Voyage took 88 days and she was detained 8 days in channel.

He signs himself on as ‘Alfred Thening [or Therning]’ - the spelling’s not very clear. His details are born Sweden, age 24. Under the column 'previous ship’ it is not clear but it looks like ‘C. Hands’ – this may be Charge Hands. He was discharged at Lyttleton 25 March 1878, cause said to be desertion. Several others were similarly discharged.
He was listed in the New Zealand Police Gazette as Alfred Thembing being from Germany and deserter. Later when the warrant for his arrest was cancelled, he was listed as Afred Thembling.
There were no other Thelnings listed.
