Origin and meaning of name
THE MEANING OF THELNING
The family name TELNING means in English a shoot, a small thing starting to
grow, a seedling. Some one once said: “Did you know that now has the family
Thelning got another Telning, when the baby was born”.
WHERE DOES THE NAME THELNING COME FROM?
So far, it is found that the name Thelning seams to come from a village called
TRANKIL in the parish VARMLAND near the Norwegian border in Sweden. There is a
family home built in the 1600's which still stands there today. There seams to
be some connection also to a village name called Källsbyn near the shores of
lake Lelång in southern Värmland. This is still to be confirmed.
There is no direct link between the way the name is spelt: Thelning / Telning.
One important thing here is that the people from Bohuslan Name Index, Hans
Nicklasson Trogen page can with certainty be said not to have any relation with
the rest of the Telnings. This is a soldiers name which the soldier was given
when he was in the military and the name was often connected to the soldier
village where he lived. To start with his name was Hans Nicklasson "Trogen". But
about 1870-75 his name was changed to Telning. One can guess that the reason for
this was that there was another soldier with the name "Trogen" at the same
military establishment.

VAR KOMMER NAMNET T(H)ELNING FRÅN?
Hittills, har vi funnit att namnet T(h)elning verkar komma från en socken som
heter TRANKIL i VÄRMLAND nära Norska gränsen i Sverige. Där finns fortfarande
ett familjehus byggt på 1600 talet, det lär stå där än i dag. Det verkar också
som om det finns en anknytning till byn Kallsbyn vid stranden av sjön Lelång i
södra Värmland. Detta har ännu inte bekräftats.
Det finns ingen direkt länk mellan hur namnet är stavat: Thelning / Telning.
En viktig sak är att folket från Bohuslän Namn Index sidan, Hans Nicklasson
Trogen nu med säkerhet kan sägas inte ha någon släktskap med övriga Telningar.
Detta är ett soldatnamn som soldaten tilldelats av befälet på gängse sätt dvs
efternamnet var oftast knutet till soldattorpet. Till en början hette Hans
Niklasson "Trogen". Men kring 1870-75 så bytte han efternamn till Telning. Man
kan gissa att detta berodde på att det fanns en annan soldat "Trogen" på samma
regemente.
